Santa Monica : Council Pay Raise on Ballot

Share

Santa Monica voters will decide the fate of a ballot measure this fall that would raise the pay of City Council members and limit them to three terms in office.

The council unanimously approved putting the measure on the Nov. 3 ballot after a lengthy discussion of whether the mayor should be paid more than the rest of the council.

Originally, the proposal called for the mayor to receive $800 a month. Ultimately, the council agreed that the pay level should be $600 a month for council members and mayor, up from the current $50. The increase was recommended by the council-appointed Charter Review Commission.

Council members also decided to include in the measure a provision to limit council members to three consecutive four-year terms in office.
