BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Another Operation for Rodgers

Manager Buck Rodgers faces another operation, probably in November, on his right elbow, this time to shave bone spurs from his surgically repaired elbow and improve the mobility of the joint.

Rodgers underwent five hours of surgery to reassemble his shattered elbow and a one-hour operation on his left knee after the team’s May 21 bus accident. Visiting Anaheim Stadium Sunday to be examined by team orthopedist Lewis Yocum and to do his physical therapy, Rodgers said he’s now able to eat with his right hand and can write out a lineup card but can’t yet raise his arm above shoulder height.

“I feel better today than Saturday. I had to stay home Saturday because the knee really blew up,” said Rodgers, who attributed the swelling in his knee to overzealous stair-climbing before Friday’s game. “I had to put ice on it, but it’s better today. I should be ready (Aug. 28).”

Lance Johnson’s infield hit in the eighth, a bouncer that handcuffed shortstop Gary DiSarcina, extended Johnson’s hitting streak to 23 games. It’s the longest in the major leagues this season and tied for the fourth-longest in White Sox history. Frank Thomas stretched his hitting streak to 19 games with his three-run homer in the seventh.

After the complaints from interim Manager John Watham that the cement-like ground around home plate was producing bad bounces, the Anaheim Stadium grounds grew softened the dirt in the area. . . . Reliever Brian Harvey won’t be ready to return this week, as hoped. “It’s still coming slow, but there’s no use to hurry now,” he said. . . . Catcher Ron Tingley had to leave Sunday’s game after being hit with a pitch by Alex Fernandez in the fourth inning. Tingley sustained a bruised right forearm and his status is day to day.
