Police on Tuesday were searching for a 15-year-old boy suspected of stabbing his mother and step-brother as they slept in their South-Central Los Angeles home, authorities said.

Los Angeles Police Lt. Bruce Hagerty said the 37-year-old woman, who was not identified, and her 11-year-old stepson were stabbed early Monday at the home in the 5900 block of South 8th Avenue.

The woman was listed in extremely critical condition at Martin Luther King Jr./Drew Medical Center on Tuesday. The 11-year-old was in serious condition at UCLA Medical Center, authorities said.

Investigators said the woman’s husband discovered his wife and son in their bedrooms Monday morning. Each had been stabbed repeatedly and was unable to summon help, officers said.

“Officers are out looking for (the 15-year-old) and we’ve put out a crime broadcast,” Hagerty said. “He’ll eventually give himself up, I think.”

Detective Victor Guzman said there was a history of problems at the home, and that the suspect had run away from home several times. Investigators said they had recovered the weapons believed to have been used in the attacks, but declined to say what they were.

On Tuesday, several neighbors said they were unaware of the disturbance until police questioned them.

“This is a quiet street,” said one neighbor, whose home is a few doors from where the attacks took place, but who did not know the names of the family involved. “On top of that, people around here keep pretty much to themselves.”
