BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Harvey to Have Elbow Surgery

Share

Reliever Bryan Harvey will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow Friday to determine the cause of pain and tightness that has twice put him on the disabled list.

Harvey, who signed a four-year, $15.5-million contract last winter after getting a league-leading 46 saves, first went on the disabled list June 7, several weeks after feeling discomfort in the elbow. He made three appearances in late June before returning to the disabled list July 1. He is 0-4 with a 2.83 earned-run average in 23 games.

In assuming his first managerial assignment in 14 years, Angel pitching coach Marcel Lachemann gratefully accepted the help of fellow coaches Ken Macha and Rod Carew in formulating Tuesday’s lineup.

Lachemann took over for interim manager John Wathan after Wathan’s father suffered a fatal brain hemorrhage. Lachemann, who last managed the Anchorage Glacier Pilots of the Alaskan collegiate summer league in 1977 and 1978, will continue to concentrate on the pitching while his coaches take care of offensive strategy.

“Kenny and Rod are going to run the offensive end of things,” Lachemann said. “Kenny and John had a pretty good feel for what they want to do, and when you’re not involved directly in the offense, there’s no sense in my stepping in.”

Discussions have begun on a one-year contract extension for Manager Buck Rodgers, a form of compensation for missing more than half this season because of the injuries he suffered in the team’s May 21 bus accident.

The contract Rodgers signed last Aug. 26 took him through 1994. However, he has already sat out 75 games and could miss 89 games if he returns Aug. 28, as planned. An extension would, in effect, give him back this lost year. “We’re talking, but nothing’s been settled,” Rodgers said.

Catcher John Orton was transferred from Mesa to triple-A Edmonton on 20-day rehabilitation assignment. . . . Edmonton infielder Bobby Rose was told to rest his strained right forearm for four weeks.
