Michael Carbajal of Phoenix, the International Boxing Federation junior-flyweight champion, battered Jorge Roman before a sparse hometown crowd but was unable to stop his opponent in their 10-round, non-title bout.

Carbajal (25-0) won a unanimous decision, his sixth in a row since he knocked out Macario Santos on Feb. 17, 1991.

“Like I said, he was a smart fighter,” Carbajal said of Roman (16-6-1). “He’s not the typical Mexican fighter, where most of them coming in brawling.”
