The San Diego Chargers on Thursday acquired quarterback Stan Humphries from the Washington Redskins for a draft choice. General Manager Bobby Beathard said Humphries will compete with the Chargers’ three other quarterbacks for the starting position.

“In Stan we’re getting a very talented passer who is familiar with our system,” Beathard said, noting the similarities between the Washington and San Diego offenses.

“At this time of year we need to have four quarterbacks in camp,” he said. “We’ll give him every opportunity to compete with our other three quarterbacks to earn the starting job.”

Beathard reopened trade talks with Redskin General Manager Charley Casserly after learning that starting quarterback John Friesz would miss the entire season because of torn knee ligaments in the Chargers’ exhibition-opening loss Saturday at Phoenix.

If Humphries takes at least half the snaps in the upcoming season, the Redskins will get a third-round pick. Otherwise, the selection will be from the fourth round.

The Chargers’ other quarterbacks are six-year veteran Bob Gagliano, Jeff Graham and Pat O’Hara. Gagliano has started 12 of the 27 NFL games in which he has played and saw limited action last year as Friesz’s backup. Graham and O’Hara have never played in the NFL.

Green Bay Packers’ offensive lineman Tony Mandarich has been hospitalized because of headaches related to a concussion he sustained Saturday in the exhibition opener against Kansas City. Mandarich spent Wednesday night in a Green Bay hospital and was still there Thursday morning. . . . Three weeks into training camp, the Buffalo Bills still don’t know whether defensive standout Bruce Smith will be ready for the season opener Sept. 6 against the Rams. He hasn’t practiced with the team yet as he rehabilitates his left knee from March 9 surgery.
