LOCAL NOTES : Fruhwirth Loses in Amateur Golf

Amy Fruhwirth, a Cypress High graduate, lost her bid to repeat as U.S. Women’s Amateur golf champion when she was beaten Friday in the quarterfinals.

Fruhwirth, who now lives in Phoenix, lost to 1973 champion Carol Semple Thompson of Sewickley, Pa., 1-up, on the 6,345-yard Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Long Grove, Ill.

Semple Thompson was beaten by Vicki Goetze of Watkinsville, Ga., 5 and 4 in the semifinals.

Annika Sorenstam, 21, a native of Sweden who attended Arizona, and Goetze, the last two NCAA women’s champions, each won twice Friday to advance to the final.

Krista Klein, a 1986 Mission Viejo High graduate, failed to hold an early lead and finished second to Kristen Kane of Kingston, Wash., in the women’s one-meter springboard in the National Diving Championships at The Woodlands, Tex.

Klein, a three-time national champion, finished with 431.82. Kane had 440.40.

A team from Sakae High School in Saitama, Japan, defeated the Orange County Batbusters, 1-0, in the title game of the American Fastpitch Assn. International Friendship softball tournament at Maxwell Park in Anaheim.

Sakae scored on a second-inning home run off Lisa Pitt, and became the only team in the tournament to beat the Batbusters.

Earlier in the day, the Batbusters beat the Mission Viejo Chicks Chicks, 4-1, in the quarterfinals and the Garden Grove Bandits, 3-0, in the semifinals.

The Garden Grove-based Batbusters, who last weekend won the AFA national championship in the 14-and-under division, were the youngest entry in the 24-team tournament for girls 18-and-under. They finished their 11-month travel season with a 152-15 record.

Kyle Evans and Darren Troilo each accounted for three runs as Ocean View defeated Houston, 9-0, in the Palomino World Series at Greensboro, N.C. The victory assured Ocean View of the championship of its group and a berth in Sunday’s championship game against Johnson City, Tenn.

Evans was was three for three including a sixth-inning solo homer. Troilo was two for four, scored twice and drove in a run.

Matt Woods, Robert Besanson and Bill Speer combined on a one-hitter. In 14 innings in the tournament, Ocean View has outscored its opponents, 15-0, and allowed only four hits.

Ocean View faces Hawaii today.

David Warady of Huntington Beach lost 37 minutes 42 seconds of his overall lead Friday in Stage 56 of the 64-day Runner’s World Trans America footrace.

Warady covered the 43.4 miles from Monongahela, Pa., to Ligonier, Pa., in 7:57:02, 1:11:42 behind stage winner Emile Laharrague of France. Warady leads second-place Milan Milanovic of Switzerland by 14:36:17 in the overall competition.

Thirteen of the original 24 starters remain in the race. Stage 57 today will be about 37 hilly miles from Ligonier to Schellsburg, Pa.

Bob May of La Habra shot a four-under 68 in the first round of the Ben Hogan Texarkana Open in Texarkana, Ark. May shot 33-35 at the Texarkana County Club, but is five shots behind Tommy Tollis, who shot 63.

Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach defeated Mike Bryan of Camarillo in a semifinal match of the U.S. Tennis Assn. boys’ 14 championship at San Antonio.

Mike Briggs of Newport Beach and Trevor Kronemann, a former UC Irvine standout, defeated Scott Davis of Newport Beach and David Pate of Las Vegas 7-6 (13-11), 6-4, in a quarterfinal doubles match of the $1.4-million ATP Championship men’s tennis tournament at Mason, Ohio.

Davis and Pate were seeded fifth.

Tara Nowling, who played at Solano College last season, has signed to play basketball at Cal State Fullerton this fall. Nowling, who is 5 feet 11, averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds last season. She will have three years of eligibility for the Titans.
