From Staff and Wire Reports

All-American tailback Russell White and four of his California teammates have come down with chicken pox at their training camp in Santa Rosa.

But the spread of the illness appeared to have stopped, at least momentarily, among the 105 players at the camp, assistant athletic director Kevin Reneau said.

The stricken players are expected to return to practice in about a week and will have two weeks to prepare for Cal’s season opener Sept. 5 against San Jose State.

Tackle Chidi Ahanotu, safety Jerod Cherry, cornerback Chris Cannon and wide receiver Scott Nady also came down with the illness.

But chicken pox tests turned up negative for cornerback Jody Graham and guard Sam Sagapolu, who also felt sick Friday.

About two dozen players taking part in the weeklong training camp said they did not have chicken pox as children and are therefore at risk.
