BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Butler Takes Wait-and-See Attitude

Share

At least one Dodger was surprised to hear that Darryl Strawberry was going to postpone surgery and attempt a comeback this season.

“The only thing I know is that he was out for the year,” center fielder Brett Butler said. “That’s what I was told.”

Butler said he will wait and see how Strawberry performs upon his return.

“We still don’t know what’s going on yet,” Butler said. “It’s premature to answer that question. I can’t comment on it until I see what happens.”

How bad are things going? First baseman Eric Karros said that he might have struck out on a pitchout during the eighth inning of Sunday’s game.

With Butler on first base and two out, Giant reliever Mike Jackson was called in to face Karros. He took a third strike after catcher Kirt Manwaring set up outside in what Karros thought was an attempt to throw out Butler, who was running on the pitch.

“He (Manwaring) set up on the outside, then Jackson threw a slider that caught the inside part of the plate,” Karros said. “It may have been a pitchout.”

The Dodgers committed their 125th error Sunday in their 117th game. “I’ve found out that at this level, when you make a mistake, it costs you,” Karros said. “You can overcome them in the minor leagues. This isn’t the minor leagues.” . . . For the fifth consecutive game, a Dodger starter gave up three runs or fewer in at least six innings pitched. . . . The Dodgers are 13-31 in one-run games.
