Mike Cofer finally put his best foot forward, making a 48-yard field goal as the game ended Sunday to give the San Francisco 49ers a 17-15 exhibition victory over the Washington Redskins at Wembley, England.

Cofer, who earlier had missed kicks of 41 and 47 yards, came on after Steve Bono had moved San Francisco to the Washington 30 on the strength of a 19-yard pass to Cal State Long Beach’s Mark Seay and a 10-yarder to Ron Lewis.

It was the third consecutive defeat for the defending Super Bowl champions, who have lost their exhibition games by a total of four points.

Chip Lohmiller’s 45-yard field goal had given Washington a 15-14 lead with 3:32 remaining.

Washington quarterback Mark Rypien played his first game after a contract holdout, completing two of seven passes for 50 yards. Bono was 13 for 21 for 187 yards.

Browning Nagle passed for two first-half touchdowns--one a 70-yard play to Rob Carpenter--and set up a third as the New York Jets stayed perfect in the exhibition season by beating the Green Bay Packers, 24-7, at Madison, Wis.

The Jets improved to 3-0 in the penalty-filled game at the University of Wisconsin’s Camp Randall Stadium by striking for three second-quarter touchdowns and shutting down the Packers (1-1).

Nagle, who completed only two of 11 passes last week against the Redskins, connected on nine of 16 for 208 yards in his one half of play. In a span of 3:36, he hit Terance Mathis with a seven-yard touchdown pass and the long play to Carpenter that made the score 17-7 with 7:19 left in the half.

Nagle later found Chris Burkett with a 28-yard pass to the Packer 1 in the closing minute and Freeman McNeil carried the final yard for the touchdown with 30 seconds to play in the half.
