LOCAL NOTES : Woods Extends Golf Lead to 10 Strokes in North Carolina

Tiger Woods of Cypress extended his lead to 10 strokes at the Insurance Youth Golf Classic, by shooting three-under-par 69 Monday on the Pinehurst Country Club No. 7 Course in Pinehurst, N.C.

Woods, 16, who will be a junior at Western High School this fall, has a three-day total of 207. Michael Jones of Mesa, Ariz., is in second at 217. Two players are tied for third, 14 shots behind Woods.

Chris Berry of Yorba Linda and Esperanza High shot a 79 for a total of 230, dropping him from a 17th-place tie to a tie for 23rd.

Kellee Booth of Coto de Caza shot three-over 75 to give her a tie for first place after one round of the Raymond Floyd Turnberry Isle Junior Classic in Aventura, Fla.

Booth, who will be a junior at Santa Margarita High, is tied with Jenny Bartley of Houston, a shot ahead of Wendi Patterson of Atlanta, in the American Junior Golf Assn. event.

David Warady of Huntington Beach finished eighth but maintained a comfortable lead in the Runner’s World Trans America Footrace. Tom Rogozinksi of Pittsburgh won the 55.6-mile stage from McConnellsburg to New Oxford, Pa., in 8 hours 26 minutes 22 seconds.

Warady finished in 10:02:34 and has an 11:28:04 overall lead over Switzerland’s Milan Milanovich with five days remaining. Today’s stage will be from New Oxford to Lancaster, Pa., a distance of about 50 miles.

Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos won the $250,000 Olympic year ’92 tournament in Almeria, Spain, defeating a team from Brazil, 12-3, 12-3, in the finals.
