Gulls Sign Nichols to 2-Year Contract Extension

Winger Robbie Nichols agreed to a two-year contract extension with the Gulls, vice president and general manager Don Waddell announced Tuesday.

Nichols, 28, becomes the 10th Gulls player to agree to terms for the 1992-93 IHL season. In 77 games last year, Nichols scored 30 goals and had 35 assists and led the Gulls with seven short-handed goals.

One of two original Gulls along with Larry Floyd, Nichols shared team most valuable player honors last year with center Len Hachborn and right wing Dmitri Kvartalnov. In the 1992 IHL All-Star game, Nichols scored a goal and added four assists in the West’s 7-6 victory at Atlanta.

BASKETBALL

The San Diego State men’s home basketball schedule will be highlighted by a visit from UNLV Dec. 12 at Peterson Gym, the site of Aztec home games this season. After exhibition games with Melbourne, Australia and Marathon Oil Nov. 19 and 27, the Aztecs open with University of San Diego in the annual city championship at the Sports Arena Dec. 1. The Aztecs’ road schedule includes December games against Arizona State and Lamar.

The San Diego State women’s schedule includes home games against USD, Loyola Marymount, St. John’s, Oregon State and USC.

COACHING CHANGES

Todd Lee is leaving his assistant men’s basketball coaching position at the University of San Diego for a similar spot with the Rapid City Thrillers of the Continental Basketball Assn. Lee, 28, will be the first assistant to former USD player Eric Musselman, the Thrillers’ coach and general manager. USD Coach Hank Egan will began a search for a new assistant immediately.

UC San Diego Athletic Director Judith Sweet announced that Mike Fitchett has been named the men’s and women’s diving coach and Ted Van Arsdale the men’s and women’s cross country coach. Fitchett, a four-time All-American diver at Cal State Chico, was the diving coach at Clemson University where he coached six NCAA All-Americans. Van Arsdale coached cross country at Mesa College from 1986 and 1989 and is currently director of UCSD’s Masters Running program.

GOLF

Lenny Hall and Pat Perez shot 72s to share the first round lead in the boys’ 15-17 division of the San Diego County Junior golf championships at Balboa Park.
