Chance of Lifetime, Lifetime of Chance

Richard Lapchick has been trying to persuade young blacks, who want to succeed in professional sports, that the odds are stacked heavily against them (Lonnie White’s story on Aug. 14).

Twenty years ago, Harry Edwards, in his sociology class, “Race and Sport,” at the University of California, was teaching the very same thing.

However, it’s hard to turn your back on what could be a lucrative pro career, if you think you have a chance at success.
