PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE NFL : Colts’ George Out for About 4 Weeks
An examination showed no torn ligament in quarterback Jeff George’s right thumb, but he is expected to be out for four weeks while the strained ligament heals, the Indianapolis Colts announced.
George was injured when he hit the helmet of a Cincinnati defender in the first half of Saturday night’s exhibition game with the Bengals. “The injury is a recurrence of a collegiate injury and no surgery is scheduled,” a club spokesman said.
Jack Trudeau remains unsigned, leaving Mark Herrmann and Tom Tupa as the only quarterbacks available for the Colts’ final preseason game at Kansas City on Friday.
Jeff Hostetler, New York Giants quarterback, remains in a lot of back pain and will miss a couple of days of practice despite X-rays being negative, Coach Ray Handley said. Although Handley was not sure when Hostetler would return, the coach said he didn’t think it would jeopardize Hostetler’s status as the Giants’ No. 1 quarterback for the season opener Sept. 6.
Tony Tolbert, Dallas Cowboy defensive end, signed a three-year contract, reportedly worth $1.8 million, according to the Dallas Morning News.
