No Cause of Death Cited in Cate Case : Aftermath: An investigation is pending and more tests are ordered after autopsy of UC Irvine soccer player.

The county coroner’s office did not release a cause of death for UC Irvine soccer player Terrie Cate after Sunday’s autopsy, instead ordering toxicology tests, the results of which are not expected for several weeks.

Cate, 18, died Saturday, three days after collapsing during a six-mile training run at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Bill King, a spokesman for the coroner’s office, said the investigation is pending and no official cause of death has been determined. A drug screen has been ordered, and a pathologist also will perform microscopic studies of tissues.

Last week, an autopsy performed the day after the death of San Fernando High School football player Sergio Echevarria confirmed that he died of heatstroke. Echevarria collapsed shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday after practicing for an hour in 102-degree weather.

Cate’s mother, Shirley Cate of Escondido, said doctors indicated they suspected heatstroke after Cate was transported to Irvine Medical Center with a 107-degree temperature and an elevated pulse. Cate collapsed at about the five-mile mark of the six-mile run.

Ray Smith, coach of the Irvine women’s soccer team, said Monday he received a call from the coroner’s office asking if Cate had been wearing anything heavy that might have particularly caused her to overheat.

“She was wearing a light T-shirt and shorts,” said Smith, who postponed the start of the run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. because of temperatures that reached the 90s Wednesday. Smith said the temperature at the time of the run did not seem “bothersome.”

“I had run that course every day for a month at 12 in the afternoon when it was really hot, and I’m not in as good a shape as (the players) are,” Smith said.

Cate had allergies and was slightly asthmatic, her mother said. Smith said he understood Cate had been on some type of medication. In addition, teammates told Smith that Cate had little to eat or drink Wednesday as she prepared for the run.
