From Staff and Wire Reports

National City police stumbled across a ton of marijuana valued at $1 million Wednesday during an investigation of a reported hit-and-run accident.

Officers were dispatched to a gas station at 1616 E. Plaza Blvd. about 7:10 p.m. Wednesday after a citizen called in and reported a hit and run at that location, Sgt. Craig Boegler said.

When they arrived, police found a brand new Ford pickup with a camper shell sitting in the parking lot with the windows rolled down.

“Nobody in their right mind would leave a brand new truck sitting there with the windows rolled down in National City, at Palm (Avenue) and Plaza (Boulevard),” Boegler said.

A car was pulling out of the area when police pulled in, but officers thought nothing of it at the time, he said.

An officer checked to see if anyone was inside the truck. Instead, he found about a ton of marijuana in wrapped bricks. The square, plastic-wrapped packages were about 18 inches long, the spokeswoman said.

Police have no suspects, but are questioning the citizen who called in the hit-and-run, Boegler said.
