PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Adams Is Waived, Simmons Returns

Share

The Raiders did some addition and subtraction Thursday, releasing Stefon Adams and replacing him with Stacey Simmons.

Adams, a wide receiver-kick returner, was waived with an injury settlement. He suffered a knee injury last Saturday against the Washington Redskins. A player cannot be cut while injured.

A six-year veteran, Adams has bounced around since being drafted by the Raiders on the third round in 1985.

His best season on special teams was 1986 when he returned 27 kicks for 573 yards, an average of 21.3 per kick.

Adams also played for the Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins before returning to the Raiders this season.

Simmons, also a receiver-kick returner, was brought back after being cut Tuesday.

The Raiders gave a tryout to former Ram defensive back Latin Berry. Berry worked out at running back, a position he played at Oregon.

“We haven’t decided anything yet,” said George Karras, the Raiders’ scouting director. “We are just taking a look.”

The Raiders appear to be overstocked at running back--unless rumors that Marcus Allen will be traded should prove true.

Allen continues to be bothered by foot problems.

When he reported to camp after holding out, he was sidelined because of a sore arch.

He recovered sufficiently to play last Saturday against the Redskins, but bruised his foot and hasn’t practiced since.

He is questionable for the Raiders’ exhibition final Saturday at the Coliseum against the Houston Oilers.
