Tiger Woods was eliminated Saturday and Justin Leonard won twice to lead eight survivors into the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur Championship at Muirfield Village Golf Club at Dublin Ohio.

Leonard, the second-ranked amateur in the country, needed only 29 holes to win two matches. The University of Texas junior defeated Brian Gay in the third round, 5 and 4, then eliminated Robert Hughes, 4 and 3.

Woods, at 16 the youngest player in the field, was beaten, 6 and 4, by Tim Herron in the second round. Woods, from Cypress, has won the last two U.S. Junior Amateur titles.

Joining Leonard in the quarterfinals are Allen Doyle, a 44-year-old driving range owner from LaGrange, Ga., University of Arkansas golfer David White, New York stockbroker George Zahringer, North Carolina State’s Kelly Mitchum, former North Carolina golfer Tommy Scherrer, University of Toledo product Mike Stone, and John Harris, co-medalist with Doyle in the 1991 Amateur.

The quarterfinal and semifinal matches are scheduled for today with the 36-hole final on Monday.

A 63 by Mark Calcavecchia that included three twos, two of them back to back, wasn’t enough to keep Craig Stadler from expanding his lead to three strokes in the third round of the World Series of Golf.

Stadler shot a one-under-par 69 to add two shots to his advantage going into today’s final round of the chase for a $252,000 first prize at Akron, Ohio.

Stadler is at seven-under 203, three shots ahead of David Peoples, who had a 68. Calcavecchia, after what he called “the best round of my life,” and Fred Couples are tied at 207.

Stadler, 39, who ended an eight-year drought with a victory in the Tour Championship last year, had two birdies and one bogey and parred the last 11 holes.

“Kind of like playing the no-pass line all day,” he said.

Beth Daniel, seeking her first victory of the year after four second-place finishes, matched Dottie Mochrie with an even-par 72 to share the second-round lead in the $450,000 LPGA Challenge at Naperville, Ill.

Daniel and Mochrie, a three-time winner and first on the money list with more than $600,000, were tied at one-under-par 143. They were the only two players under par after two rounds in a tournament shortened to 54 holes because rains canceled Thursday’s round.

First-round leader Judi Pavon shot a 79.

Bob Betley and Orville Moody each shot five-under-par 67 and are tied for the lead at seven-under 137 after two rounds of the $400,000 Showdown Senior Classic at Park City, Utah.

U.S. Senior Open champion Larry Laoretti (69) and first-round co-leader Jack Kiefer (71) share second place at at 138.
