Tu Helps U.S. Girls Win World Tennis Title

Meilen Tu of Northridge defeated Annabel Illwood, 6-4, 6-4, as the United States beat Australia, 3-0, Saturday to win the girls’ 14-and-under division of the International Tennis Federation World Youth Cup in Tokyo.
In the boys’ 14-and-under final, Bob Bryan of Camarillo teamed with Geoff Abrams of Newport Beach for a 6-1, 6-3 doubles victory over Clemens Trimmel and Markus Hipfl, but the United States lost to Austria, 2-1.
Ron Winger of Tarzana lost to Teata Semiz, 215-214, in the semifinal of the $135,000 Ebonite Professional Bowlers Assn. Senior championship in Cheektowaga, N.Y.
Winger, who was seeded second for the stepladder finals, collected $7,000.
Rick Miller of Reseda scored six points in the speedway motorcycle world championships in Warsaw and finished eight points behind defending champion Gary Havelock of Great Britain.
