Have glove, will travel.

Ask shortstop David Lamb what it’s like to live out of a suitcase, and he can supply a lengthy first-person account.

Over the past month, Lamb has journeyed to locales such as San Jose and Yountville, Calif., Las Vegas, Minneapolis, and Fargo, N.D.

Today, he is scheduled to leave for South Korea to play for a team of high school all-stars in a series of exhibition tournaments.

“It’s been a long summer,” Lamb said. “But it’s been worth it.”

Lamb and his Newbury Oaks teammates swept a pair of games to win the American Legion World Series championship Sunday in Fargo.

Newbury Oaks (41-3) defeated defending champion Brooklawn, N.J., 3-0, in the afternoon game. In the final, Newbury Oaks hammered Arlington Heights, Ill., 10-0, to win the first Legion title in Ventura County history.

The championship game is scheduled to be televised on ESPN today at 10 a.m.

Everything seemed to come easy for Lamb in particular, who was selected the national Legion Player of the Year. In 12 games spanning regional and Series play--called national competition--Lamb was 20 for 47. In the Series alone, he had two hits over each of the first five games and three in the championship game.

Two other players also won individual awards. Left-handed finesse pitcher Tighe Curran (10-1) was given the Bob Feller Award for recording the most strikeouts (35) in national competition.

First baseman Trent Martin only had four hits in six Series games, but all came in the team’s final at-bat. The last of the hits, in the bottom of the eighth against Arlington in the final, drove in a run to hand him the Irvin L. Cowger award for most runs batted in during regional and Series play. He finished with 17 RBIs, one ahead of his nearest pursuer.

Lamb, who will be a senior at Newbury Park High School, was given a $2,000 college scholarship in addition to his Player of the Year plaque. Several others could easily have won the award. Leadoff batter Ryan Kritscher was 12 for 24 in the Series and was eight for 10 in the doubleheader sweep Sunday. He scored 11 runs in Series play.

Catcher Robert Fick was 21 for 57 against national competition and caught all but two innings in the team’s last 12 games.
