CHESS RESULTS : Fischer-Spassky Game 3 Ends in Draw

Share

Former world chess champions Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky played to a draw in game three of their “Revenge Match of the Century” Saturday in Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia. Fischer leads, 1-0, with two draws.

Saturday’s game followed the course of Wednesday’s first game until move 16, when Spassky, playing black, introduced a new idea that solved all of his problems. He achieved equality immediately and a small advantage a few moves later, but he could not make further progress. The final position was still slightly favorable to black, but Spassky chose to accept Fischer’s offer of a draw.

The fourth game is scheduled today. The match will continue on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays until one player wins 10 games. The moves of Saturday’s game are listed below.
