400,000 in County Illiterate
According to the San Diego Council on Literacy:
* About 400,000 adult residents of San Diego County are functionally illiterate.
* The percentage of illiterates in the local population is probably 5% higher than the 20% national average because of our large immigrant population. (Roughly one city resident out of five was born in a foreign country.)
Over the last decade, the county’s immigrant population rose 82%. Forty-four percent of the county’s illiterate population is Latino.
About 18% of San Diego adults over age 25 did not complete high school. The 1991 dropout rate for county schools was 11.4%, down from 16.2% the previous year (the state average is 18%).
