PREP FOOTBALL : Huntington Beach Defeated by Downey
All-Southern Section quarterback Johnny Macon threw for one touchdown and ran for another as Downey beat Huntington Beach, 21-3, in the season opener Friday night at Downey.
Macon, who also kicked an extra point, scored from the 15 late in the third quarter after defensive lineman Brian Maley recovered the Oilers’ fumbled punt return.
In the first play of the second quarter, running back Jahi Arnold intercepted Jonathan Wimbish’s pass, and two plays later, Macon hit Jeff Johnson with a 47-yard touchdown pass. Arnold led the Vikings with 125 yards on 18 carries.
Londell Lindsey scored from 20 yards out on his first carry of the game. Huntington Beach scored on Corey Austin’s 18-yard field goal in the second quarter.
While Downey could have scored one more touchdown after taking the ball down to the Oilers’ four-yard line with a few seconds left on the clock, Downey Coach Phil Dunaway ran out the clock.
“I wouldn’t kick someone when he’s down,” Dunaway said, “and I would hope he would show me the same courtesy.”
