USAC pit steward Carl McCormick, 56, was killed when he was struck by a car during a caution period in the 40th annual A.J. Foyt Hoosier 100 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds.
McCormick was tending to the car of Wally Pankratz, which had spun on the 33rd lap and brought out one of many yellow lights and red flags during the USAC Silver Crown race, race officials said.
During the caution period, McCormick was struck by another race car. USAC officials would not release the name of the driver who hit McCormick.
