GOLF ROUNDUP : With His Touch Back, Norman Wins Playoff

Greg Norman came back from the brink of another collapse and ended the longest non-winning streak of his career.

The Australian birdied the second playoff hole Sunday and beat Bruce Lietzke for the Canadian Open championship at Oakville, Canada.

“I’d almost forgotten what it’s like to win a tournament,” Norman said. “It’s been a long time.

“It’s like winning my first tournament. I’m more excited than anything since winning my first tournament. I needed it.”

Norman, once ranked as the world’s leading player, went 27 months--since the 1990 Memorial--without a victory before his 2 1/2-foot putt for a birdie found the cup on the second extra hole.

Norman and Lietzke playing in the final twosome, each birdied the last hole of regulation. They finished tied at 280, eight under par, after a wild run down the stretch that saw Fred Couples and defending champion Nick Price leading or sharing the lead at one time or another over the back nine.

Lietzke, who let a two-shot lead get away with bogeys on three of his first four holes, matched par 72.

Norman, three ahead with five holes to play, let that advantage evaporate and shot 70.

Terry Dill shot a two-under-par 70 in the final round of the Bank One Senior Golf Classic at Lexington, Ky., to win his first Senior PGA Tour title.

Dill won by four strokes over Bruce Crampton and Dale Douglass. Raymond Floyd, making his debut on the senior tour, shot a 71 and finished six strokes behind.

Jim Dent shot a course-record 62, but finished eight shots back of Dill.

Jane Crafter missed a four-foot par putt on the second playoff hole to give Nancy Lopez the victory in the $450,000 Ping-Cellular One Golf Championship, her second win in as many weeks.

Crafter sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole at Portland, Ore., to force the playoff after Tina Barrett’s game fell apart.

Barrett, who began the day with a two-shot advantage, led Lopez by four strokes and Crafter by six with seven holes remaining.

Lopez and Crafter finished the 54-hole regulation play at seven-under-par 209. Crafter shot 72 Sunday, Lopez 69.
