PLATFORM : A Tear at the Fabric

Share
GILBERT CEDILLO, general manager of Local 660 Service Employees International Union, representing 42,000 county workers, says layoffs could drastically affect South Los Angeles. He told the Times:

Much of our work force--about 30%--is in South Los Angeles. (The proposed layoffs) would have a devastating effect. Just to give some perspective: (Officials) are suggesting between 9,000 to 12,000 layoffs. That is comparable to two plant closures like that of the Van Nuys GM plant. You can imagine an economically depressed area like South Los Angeles being affected much worse.

Our people are working people, but in many instances they are the working poor or very close to that line. At a time in which much of the discussion is about rebuilding L.A., this would tear at the very fabric that keeps it together.

They have a multitiered health-benefit system in the county. Much of the benefits go to the smallest percent of managers. We’re all human beings and we all get sick. Disease doesn’t care what your benefit package looks like. If the package for the bulk of workers is adequate, then it should be adequate for everybody. It’s a problem for the whole community.
