SOUTH COUNTY : Source of Shaking Remains a Mystery
Windows rattled and buildings shook, but Caltech officials say it wasn’t an earthquake that caused the unexplained rumbling in South County Tuesday afternoon.
San Clemente Police and county Sheriff’s Department authorities said they received about 30 calls from South County residents wondering if an earthquake or sonic boom caused the disturbance about 5:15 p.m. Except for a broken window in San Clemente, there were no reports of injuries or damage, authorities said.
“It was just a sharp bang type of thing,” San Clemente Police Sgt. Richard Downing said.
Officials at the El Toro Marine Corps Air Station and Camp Pendleton said they were unaware of any base activities that could have caused the shake.
Caltech spokesman Steve Bryant said there were no earthquakes at the time of the shaking, although he received calls from as far north as the South Bay area in Los Angeles County about the rumbling. “We have no idea what caused this shaking,” Bryant said.
