Magic Johnson

Share

Here we go again, faced with all the hoopla surrounding the return of Magic Johnson to the Lakers (Sept. 30). As a person who has watched many young people suffer the horrors of AIDS, I am not quite as taken with his return as many are. When Magic was diagnosed, rather than continue playing and, by doing so, demonstrating to the millions who have and will be affected by AIDS that an infected person’s life can go on, Magic quit.

Following Magic’s “retirement” from basketball, he was appointed to the AIDS commission and his appointment became a source of great hope for those stricken with this deadly disease. But, once again, the going got rough, Magic, rather than using his worldwide influence to fight the disease and bring a change to those who don’t care, quit (Sept. 26).

Who will join the fight against this deadly disease and stick with the fight, no matter how rough the going gets?
