Olson Upsets Van Den Bosch in Wheelchair Tennis

Nancy Olson of Stony Point, N.Y., upset top-seeded Monique van den Bosch of the Netherlands, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, in a women’s singles semifinal at the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships Wednesday at the Irvine Racquet Club.

Olson, ranked No. 1 in the United States and seeded fourth at the U.S. Open, will play in the final Saturday at noon against the winner of today’s semifinal between Regina Isecke of Germany and Chantal Vandierendonck of the Netherlands.

Van den Bosch, ranked No. 1 in the world, was the defending U.S. Open champion.

In men’s singles Wednesday, Dan Lachman of Corona del Mar was eliminated in the round of 16, losing to Michael Foulks of La Jolla, 7-6, 6-2.

Foulks will play Brad Parks of San Clemente at 10 a.m. today in the quarterfinals.

The tournament is the largest of its kind, with a field of 235 players from 16 countries. Play continues through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
