Add a coat and umbrella when packing for a picnic this weekend, weather forecasters warned, because the few sprinkles of rain that splattered San Diego this week could be a preview of what’s to come.

A lingering storm off Baja California was expected to get kicked into San Diego County by another storm sweeping down from Alaska, weather forecasters said, possibly providing the county with a soaking Saturday night.

“Storms from the southwest have a habit of picking up moisture, and there are some factors that could come into play bringing in rain,” said Wilbur Shigehara, chief meteorologist with the National Weather Service in San Diego.

However, as the storm off Mexico showed signs of weakening, the prediction Thursday night remained a 30% chance of rain, Shigehara said.

The possibility of more rain would increase if the Mexican storm were to pick up moisture from tropical storm Yolanda, 900 miles east of Hawaii, Shigehara said.

Weekend temperatures at the beach are expected to range from 68 to 73 degrees, while temperatures along the coast will range from 73 to 80 Friday, cooling off as the storm center passes over Saturday and Sunday, Shigehara said.

Temperatures inland will be 80 to 88 degrees Friday, also cooling with the storm to 78 to 83 degrees, Shigehara said. In the mountains, temperatures will reach to 72 during the day, decreasing to 45 at night, he said.

Highs in the desert will reach the mid-80s, with night time lows dropping to about 55, Shigehara said.

A chance of showers continues into next week, when a storm from Alaska is expected to arrive, Shigehara said.
