COSTA MESA : Children’s Programs Find Home at Center

Two groups aimed at helping children were granted permission this week to base their activities at the Rea Community Center.

In two unanimous decisions, the City Council agreed to allow the Newport-Mesa Unified School District and Parents Who Care, a grass-roots Latino group, to use the center.

The school district will install in the mobile office its Healthy Start Program, which provides medical and other care to non-English-speaking students new to the district. More than 1,500 students are expected to benefit this year.

The city approved a 15-month lease for $1 a year with the district, which actually owns the building but rents it to the city. In addition, the council also agreed to allow Parents Who Care to use several rooms at the Rea Center to provide tutoring, physical fitness and other programs for youths.

As part of the agreement, the city will help staff the center at a cost of $3,500 per year. The youth center, known as SOY, for Save Our Youth, is expected to be open Monday through Friday from 6 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
