COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Takes Cypress Water Polo Title

Jose Martinez scored four goals to lead Golden West to an 8-3 victory over Cuesta in the championship match of the Cypress water polo tournament Saturday at Cypress College.

Shawn King scored two goals and goalkeeper Brandon Douglas had 13 saves for the Rustlers (24-1), ranked No. 1 in the state.

Jared Johnson and Shroder Baker each scored three goals for Golden West in an 8-6 semifinal victory over Grossmont also Saturday.

In other Cypress tournament matches:

Citrus 16, Fullerton 10--Paul Marceau scored three goals for Fullerton in the seventh-place match. Marceau also scored three goals in a 9-6 loss to San Diego Mesa in an earlier consolation match.

Cypress 7, Saddleback 6 (sudden death)--Jeff Cummins scored with 20 seconds remaining in sudden death to give Cypress (13-16-2) the victory in the ninth-place match. Marc Havran scored a match-high four goals for the Chargers, and scored seven goals in Cypress’ two losses earlier Saturday.

Saddleback 14, Foothill 13 (sudden death)--Trevor Rodin scored six goals, including the game-winner in overtime, for Saddleback in a consolation match.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Golden West 3, Provo Utah Valley 3--Chris Siok, Shane Palmer and Brian Giuliano each scored first-half goals for host Golden West (5-8-3).

Denny Johnson scored two goals for Utah Valley, including the tying goal with four minutes remaining.
