BIG WEST ROUNDUP : Field Goal Lifts San Jose State

Joe Nedney’s 32-yard field goal with six seconds left gave San Jose State a 27-25 victory over Utah State Saturday in a clash for Big West Conference supremacy.

Trailing, 25-24, with 1:59 remaining, the Spartans’ defense forced the Aggies to punt. With no timeouts, San Jose quarterback Jeff Garcia drove the Spartans 65 yards in six plays to set up Nedney’s winning kick.

“I thank whoever made college football a 60-minute game,” San Jose State Coach Ron Turner said. “We practiced the two-minute offense and executed it well today.”

Garcia completed 20 of 31 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns as the Spartans improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big West. Utah State fell to 2-5 and 1-1.

Spartan freshman Brian Lundy caught eight passes for 161 yards, including touchdown receptions of nine and 29 yards.

San Jose State’s Nathan DuPree rushed for 131 yards in 34 carries.

Nevada 35, New Mexico State 21--Dedric Holmes ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns and Cornell West had 111 yards and a touchdown for Nevada at Reno.

Holmes had scoring runs of two and four yards and West scored on a four-yard run for Nevada (5-2, 4-0). Fred Gatlin threw for two touchdowns, including a 57-yard play to Brian Reeves.

Fullback Lawrence Truehill rushed for two touchdowns for the Aggies (4-4, 1-3).
