Girl on Bicycle Killed in Traffic

A 6-year-old girl riding a bicycle was killed Sunday after she was hit by a motor home on a road near Santa Clarita, the California Highway Patrol said.

The girl, who was not identified, was riding the bike at about 4:45 p.m. on Henry Mayo Drive, just west of the Golden State Freeway, when she drifted into the traffic lane, CHP Officer Robert L. Strong said.

A motor home traveling about 35 m.p.h. struck the bicycle from behind but did not knock the girl off, Strong said. The motor home then came alongside the girl, entangling the bicycle in metal steps protruding from the side of the vehicle, apparently throwing the girl off the bicycle.

The girl was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where she died shortly before 6 p.m., Strong said.

An investigation in the accident is continuing.
