Jewish Group Blasts Spike Lee: Director Spike Lee’s demand that he be interviewed by African-American journalists in connection with his upcoming movie “Malcolm X” drew fire from the American Jewish Congress. The congress sent a letter to Evan J. Kemp, chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, calling for an investigation of the employment practices of four magazines that agreed to Lee’s request: Vogue, Rolling Stone, Premiere and Interview. A similar request was turned down by the Los Angeles Times. In its letter, the congress contends that Lee’s requests are “racist” and that assigning reporters to interview Lee “solely on the basis of race” is illegal.
