Ivanisevic Wins Stockholm Open, Climbs to No. 4
Goran Ivanisevic outlasted Guy Forget in an indoor power duel Sunday and won the Stockholm Open, 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, to climb to fourth place in the ATP rankings, the highest he has been.
Ivanisevic, who vaulted over Michael Chang and Petr Korda in the rankings, fired 30 aces past Forget en route to his sixth title. Ivanisevic finished the tournament with 80 aces and leads the ATP Tour with 877 aces this year.
He earned $170,000 for winning the $1.3-million tournament. Forget, who remains No. 12 in the world, picked up $91,500.
Scores of flag-waving Croatians celebrated Ivanisevic’s biggest indoor victory at the Globe Arena.
“I had a great week. I beat Boris (Becker) and Stefan (Edberg) and now Guy,” Ivanisevic said. “I can’t complain. Now I’m No. 4 and it gives me something extra. If I play well in Paris and Frankfurt I can go even higher.”
