Howard Blackwell has rushed for 100 yards...

Howard Blackwell has rushed for 100 yards or more in seven Valley College games. The sophomore from Hart High, a transfer from Oregon, leads the Western State Conference in rushing (997 yards in 133 carries) and scoring (17 touchdowns for 102 points). Blackwell is second in the state in scoring (14.6 points per game) and fourth among state rushers (142.4 yards per game).

Junior college football: Valley quarterback Joe Mauldin has accounted for 845 yards the past two games. He has rushed for 455 yards and four touchdowns in 34 carries and has passed for 390 yards with four touchdowns (and five interceptions). He has completed 20 of 50 passes.

Glendale’s Eric Kiesau is rated second among the state’s junior college quarterbacks. He has completed 71 of 113 for 1,192 yards and 10 touchdowns with only two interceptions--a 177.1 rating. He trails only Mike Maxwell of San Bernardino Valley (184.2).

Richard Pesti of Antelope Valley is second among the state’s punters with an average of 43.2 yards a kick. . . . Glendale’s Angel Martinez leads the WSC in receptions (30 for 528 yards) and punt returns (14 for 152 yards, a 10.9 average).

Cal State Northridge: Mike Brown is ranked third in the Western Football Conference in kick and punt returns. He has 282 yards in 12 kick returns and 170 yards in 21 punt returns.

Cal Lutheran: Redlands gained 483 rushing yards in a 56-24 victory over Cal Lutheran on Saturday. The 1978 Kingsmen team allowed only 379 rushing yards all season . . . . Redlands scored touchdowns on six consecutive possessions from late in the first quarter until early in the fourth. The drives covered 91, 70, 60, 78, 69, and 84 yards. . . . Kingsmen sophomore quarterback Adam Hacker passed for a personal-record 263 yards against Redlands.

Soccer: Although the Northridge men’s team concluded the season with a 2-1 overtime loss to California on Sunday at North Campus Stadium, the Matadors finished with a 10-8 record, their 10th consecutive winning campaign under Coach Marwan Ass’ad. Ass’ad is 141-50-19 at Northridge.

Northridge was 9-2 at home, only 1-6 on the road. . . . Senior forward Danny Daniels led the Matadors in scoring for the third consecutive year. Daniels had 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. He concludes his Northridge career with 84 points (fourth on the school’s all-time list), 33 goals (tied for fourth), 18 assists (fifth) and 72 matches played (tied for fourth).

Junior midfielder Armando Valdivia finished one point behind Daniels in scoring with 25 points on 10 goals and five assists. Valdivia’s totals of 57 points, 20 goals and 17 assists rank him 10th, tied for ninth, and sixth at Northridge.

Volleyball: Northridge teammates Shelly Swalec and Heather Anderson each established tournament records at the Northridge Invitational last weekend. Swalec, a senior outside hitter, set records for block assists (23) and total blocks (26). Anderson, a sophomore middle blocker, set a record for block assists (11) in a match and tied the mark for total blocks (11) in a match.
