Five Toros and Coach Honored by CCAA

Cal State Dominguez Hills senior forward Amy Rubin has been named California Collegiate Athletic Assn. player of the year and Marine Cano was named coach of the year.

Rubin, a senior who is the school’s all-time leading scorer, led the conference in scoring with 16 goals and 40 points. Cano guided the Toros to their second consecutive CCAA title.

The Toros, who were ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II and finished with a 17-3 record, placed five players on the all-conference first team, including Rubin.

The other players are forward Teresa Bateman, midfielders Jennifer Grasso and Jennifer Womack and goalkeeper Briana O’Dowd. Bateman was second on the team in scoring with 27 points, followed by Womack with 23 and Grasso with 19.

O’Dowd, a junior who is the all-time leader in victories at Dominguez Hills, led the conference with an 0.57 goals-against average.

Dominguez Hills also placed defenders Joanna Enserro and Monica Lastrapes and midfielder Anna Rubin--Amy’s twin sister--on the second team.

The Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team, which finished its season Tuesday with a 2-0 victory over San Diego State, has placed two players on the All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. team.

Senior forward Gerardo Yepez was named to the first team and sophomore defender Keith Martin earned second-team honors.

Yepez, a former Hawthorne High and El Camino College standout, had seven goals and 21 points.

In addition, defenders Raman Bridwell and Kenneth Hodge, midfielder William Leal and goalkeeper Kevin Hartman were honorable-mention selections.

The Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball team will play host to Portland tonight and Gonzaga Sunday in West Coast Conference matches.

The Lions, who are 15-8 and second to Santa Clara in the conference at 6-1, will meet Portland at 7 and Gonzaga at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gersten Pavilion. Portland is 13-14 and 1-7 and Gonzaga is 11-12 and 4-4.

Loyola defeated Gonzaga in four games and Portland in three games this season. The Lions have never swept both teams.

Loyola has been led by middle blockers Dana Bragado and Tahlia Wagner and outside hitter Joli Eberhart, who rank one-two-three in conference hitting percentage.

South Torrance High boys’ basketball Coach LaMont Henry is putting on a basketball camp for children in grades four through eight in three sessions starting Monday at the school gymnasium.
