COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Clinches Tie for Volleyball Title

Golden West clinched at least a tie for the Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball title Friday with a three-game sweep of Orange Coast at Golden West.

Tracy Schriber led Golden West with 14 kills in the 15-3, 15-6, 15-8 victory. Golden West (22-0, 9-0 in conference) is the top-ranked team in the state and the two-time defending state champion. Orange Coast is 10-6, 7-3.

In other Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Saddleback 3, Cypress 0--Yumi Yamazaki had 12 kills and Laura Hollis had nine for Saddleback (6-10, 4-6) in the 15-6, 15-13, 15-3 sweep. Cypress is 3-10, 2-7.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:

Irvine Valley 2, Golden West 1--Giuseppe Lombardo scored for host Irvine Valley (10-4-4, 6-3-1) with about a minute left to break a 1-1 tie. Lombardo also scored in the first half. Hans Gratzer scored for Golden West (5-11-3, 1-7-2).

Riverside 4, Cypress 2--Neil Chota scored two goals for visiting Riverside (9-3-4, 6-2-2), which is in first place with a one-point lead over Irvine Valley. Greg Keel and George Charlesworth each scored one goal for Cypress (4-12-1, 1-9-1).

Orange Coast 2, Rancho Santiago 0--Sergio Suarez scored a goal in each half for host Orange Coast (9-6-1, 6-4). Both goals came off a direct kick. Rancho Santiago is 9-4-3, 4-3-3.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer:

Cypress 6, Irvine Valley 0--Laurie Wilson, a sophomore forward from La Habra, scored three second-half goals for host Cypress (14-1, 11-0). The Chargers have outscored opponents, 84-5, this season.

In the South Coast Conference water polo tournament:

Golden West 22, Cerritos 2--Ted Simpkins and Dietrich Jewell each scored four goals for Golden West (26-1) in a second-round match at Long Beach Belmont Plaza.

In the Orange Empire Conference water polo tournament:

Orange Coast 6, Saddleback 4--Six players scored a goal each for OCC (16-7-1), which plays San Diego Mesa at 11:45 a.m. today.

Rancho Santiago 10, Cypress 8--David Jones and Jeremy Yorba each scored three goals for Rancho Santiago (18-7), which plays Grossmont at 10:30 a.m. today at Saddleback.
