SEA VIEW LEAGUE FOOTBALL : Woodbridge Beats Tustin for First League Victory

Share

Although Woodbridge is out of playoff contention, Coach Rick Gibson saw some hope for the future as the Warriors edged Tustin, 3-0, Saturday night at Irvine High for their first Sea View League victory this season.

Nathan Bennett kicked a 36-yard field goal with 6 minutes 26 seconds left to account for the only points.

Fellow sophomore Ian Dominelli started at linebacker in his varsity debut last week, making 13 tackles against Newport Harbor. Saturday, Dominelli had 17 tackles and an interception that started the game’s only scoring drive.

“I wish we’d had him earlier,” Gibson said. “He just turned 15 (the CIF minimum age limit for football) last week.”

Woodbridge had the only scoring threats of the first half, but a 47-yard field-goal attempt was wide right and another was blocked after a bad snap. Tustin drove for a potential game-tying field goal with 1:04 left, but Zach Matthews’ 41-yard attempt was wide left.

Woodbridge senior quarterback Shea Stone, who completed seven of 10 passes for 130 yards, left the game in the second quarter after he was knocked unconscious. He was taken to the locker room, but was back on the sideline by the end of the game.

Junior Matt Sauk took over, completing seven of 12 passes for 72 yards.
