COLLEGE ROUNDUP : UC Irvine’s Lake Wins National Title in Yachting
Randy Lake, a senior on the UC Irvine sailing team, won the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Assn. Singlehanded National Championship Sunday at in New London, Conn.
Lake trailed by two points going into the final race, but won it and took the overall title with 76 points. Competitors took part in 16 round-robin races in Lasers.
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:
UC Irvine 11, University of the Pacific 3--Pablo Yrizar, Mark Stevenson and Kurt Elder scored three goals each for host UC Irvine (16-8, 11-3), the fourth-ranked team in the nation.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
University of San Diego 4, UC Irvine 2--Host UC Irvine led at the half, 2-1, but Chugger Adair scored twice and Doug Berry once as San Diego rallied in the second half. Thobe Taitano scored in the first half for San Diego (15-4). Dave Weidner and Manny Hernandez scored for UC Irvine, which ends the season 7-12.
