Countywide : Arson Blamed in Fire at Scouts’ Barn

Share

A fire that destroyed a Camarillo barn owned by the Ventura County Boy Scouts Council was caused by arson, investigators said Tuesday.

The fire Monday night gutted the barn used as a Boy Scouts storage facility and destroyed $50,000 worth of furnishings and equipment, including about 20 items intended for a Dec. 4 auction. No injuries were reported in the fire at 509 E. Daily Drive.

Investigators believe that two juveniles witnessed the arson and are asking them to call the Fire Department at 388-4276, Ventura County Fire Dispatcher Cece Grives said.

Meanwhile, the Scout council is asking the public for donations of goods for its 16th annual fund-raiser to replace auction items--including an IBM copier and typewriter, a hanging Tiffany lamp, antiques and a portable heater--destroyed in the fire.

This year’s auction will be held at the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Funds raised will benefit Scouting programs in the county, Snyder said. The auction usually raises about $30,000.

Among the items and services that will be auctioned are one-week stays at resorts in Florida and Hawaii and time donated by tax consultants, Snyder said.

Information can be obtained from the Boy Scouts at 482-8938.
