WOODLAND HILLS : El Camino Defends Academics Title

Share

A team of nine students from El Camino Real High School in Woodland Hills will seek to defend its title this weekend at the Los Angeles Unified School District’s 12th annual Academic Decathlon.

The group is hoping to repeat the feat of last year’s El Camino team, which went on to win the state championship. The team placed fourth at the national competition in Boise, Ida., in April.

El Camino will likely face stiff competition from cross-town rival Taft High School, which won the national title in 1989. Fifty-five teams have signed up for this year’s districtwide competition, which is scheduled Saturday at Gardena High School.

The theme of this year’s contest is “A Diversity of Achievers,” focusing on the lives and accomplishments of 30 famous world figures in fields from the arts to government. The decathlon tests students in such academic subjects as science, economics and English. Contestants must also write essays and submit to a personal interview.

The Super Quiz--a game-show-like event staged before teachers and parents--is the only decathlon event open to the public and will be held at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 4 p.m.

Winners will be announced at a Nov. 24 banquet.
