New Mexico St. Plays Host to CS Fullerton
Cal State Fullerton will attempt to salvage what’s left of another losing season today when it plays at New Mexico State in a Big West Conference game at 12:30 p.m.
The Titans (2-7, 0-4 conference) have struggled offensively, averaging 9.9 points per game and losing 34 of their 61 fumbles. But the defense has been vastly improved over recent seasons, giving up a conference-leading average of only 125.3 yards rushing, which ranks Fullerton 20th in the nation.
“I think Fullerton is playing the best defense of anyone in the conference right now,” New Mexico State Coach Jim Hess said. “They’d be in the conference race if not for their turnovers.”
The Aggies (4-5, 1-3) have cooled considerably since their 3-0 start, which came on the heels of Sports Illustrated naming them “The Worst Team in America” in its preseason college football preview. They have lost three consecutive games, but a victory today would give New Mexico State more victories than it had in the previous four seasons combined.
