HIGH SCHOOL WATER POLO PLAYOFFS : Carlsbad Edges San Pasqual

Carlsbad got four goals apiece from Mike Armour and sophomore Chris Piersoll and scored an 11-10 victory over San Pasqual in the first round of the San Diego Section 2-A water polo playoffs at El Cajon Valley High School.

The victory by Carlsbad (16-9) sets up a quarterfinal contest against top-seeded Bishop’s at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at El Cajon Valley.

Shane Frank and Patrick Berhman scored four goals apiece for San Pasqual (17-10).

In other 2-A games:

Valhalla 19, El Cajon Valley 3-- Dan Branch scored five goals and Jon Stern scored three times for Valhalla (17-11). Danielle Dabbaghin scored two goals in a losing effort for El Cajon Valley (4-17).

El Capitan 20, University City 6--Grant Jenkins scored four times for El Capitan (17-7). It is the second time El Capitan has been in the playoffs and the first time it has won. Last year, El Capitan was beaten by one point in the quarterfinals--by University City. UC is 5-14.

Santana 17, Escondido 12--Eric Richards scored six goals and Travis Hager scored four to lead Santana (10-14) in the upset. Gilbert Clark scored seven times for Escondido (13-14).

Division 3-A:

Orange Glen 13, Vista 6--This game was closer than the score indicated, as Orange Glen (19-9) scored five times in the game’s final three minutes. Jason Carss led the Patriots with six goals. Trevor Grimm, Nick Wandler and Eric Sorenson scored two apiece for Vista (10-17).

Bonita Vista 10, Patrick Henry 9--Brian Groat had five goals and Jason Lohre had two to lead Bonita Vista (22-6). Daniel Link led Patrick Henry (14-10) with three goals, and Troy Merkel added two.

Mt. Carmel 20, Hilltop 8--Kurt Hatch, Tom Bate, Travis Prentice and Justin Duva scored three goals apiece to lead a balanced attack by Mt. Carmel (20-8), which had nine players score. The starters played only the first half and every player--including those brought up from the junior varsity--played at least a quarter. Hilltop is 16-8.

Fallbrook 14, Mt. Miguel 11--Fallbrook improved to 13-15 and plays No. 1 Poway at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Monte Vista High School. Mt. Miguel is 15-12.
