OXNARD : Man Shot in Back While Fleeing Party

An Oxnard man was recovering Monday after being shot once in the back while fleeing from a party in La Colonia where a fight had broken out.

Randy Fredrick, 33, was at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard in fair condition, a hospital spokesman said.

Fredrick told police that he was talking to someone outside a party in the 100 block of Roosevelt Avenue at 12:05 a.m. Sunday when the two began arguing and scuffling. Party-goers inside the home spilled out to see what was going on and Fredrick decided to leave, said Oxnard police spokesman David Keith.

As he was riding away on a bicycle, he heard several gunshots and felt a bullet hit him in the back, Keith said. He continued pedaling and flagged down a police officer who happened to be in the vicinity, Keith said.

Fredrick told police he did not know the name of the person he argued with or who had shot him. An investigation into the shooting is continuing, Keith said.

In a separate incident in the same area, officers responding to a complaint about a loud party near 1st Street and McKinley Avenue early Sunday had their cars vandalized, Keith said.

Four police cruisers responded to the call, he said. While the officers were in the house, someone smashed the windshields of all four police cars, Keith said. The address where the party took place was not available.

Keith said it is unusual to have police cars vandalized. He estimated it will cost the city at least $1,000 to replace the windshields.
