The Eagle Rock girls’ tennis team appears to be on the verge of creating a mini-dynasty in the City Section.

The Eagles won their second straight 3-A Division championship Friday by defeating Carson 4-3 at the Racquet Center in Studio City.

Amy Hsu and Mon Ta won two-set singles matches. In doubles, Tammy Tam and Lynn Ta and Mandy Fu and Lisa Han won their matches to pace the Eagles, who finished the season with a 10-1 record.

Margarito Casillas of Hoover enters Saturday’s Southern Section cross-country finals at Mt. San Antonio College after an impressive performance at the prelims last week.

Casillas, a senior, posted the fastest time of the day by covering the three-mile course in 15 minutes, 27.96 seconds.

Other Glendale area qualifiers for the finals include La Canada’s Jeff Sneed and Carlene Pengra and Crescenta Valley’s Michelle Zayas.

The Crescenta Valley and Flintridge Prep boys’ teams qualified for the finals.

The Crescenta Valley water polo team finished its season with a 16-6 record after the Falcons lost to Royal 16-6 in the second round of the Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Crescenta Valley, which won the Pacific League, defeated Sonora 13-8 to advance to the second round.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College football team has been aiming all season for Saturday’s game against Moorpark, which will determine the champion of the Western State Conference.

Glendale, which last won a conference championship in 1987, improved its record to 8-1 and 7-1 in the WSC with a 37-10 victory over Harbor last weekend. Moorpark (8-0-1, 7-0-1) advanced to the showdown by beating Santa Barbara 30-7.

“This is what we would hope it would come down to,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said. “We’re excited to have control of our own destiny.”

Glendale, which has won seven straight games, used a 27-point second quarter to take a 30-10 halftime lead en route to the victory over Harbor. Quarterback Eric Kiesau completed 16 of 26 passes for 277 yards and three touchdowns. Pathon Rucker gained 75 yards in 10 carries.

Moorpark has the top defense in the state, giving up 157 yards a game. The Raider offense is led by quarterback Corey Tucker, who completed 13 of 25 passes for 194 yards and two touchdowns against Santa Barbara. Flanker Tim Blakeley had eight receptions for 137 yards, including the two touchdowns. Raider running back Gil Carrillo gained 146 yards in 23 carries.

The Glendale men’s basketball team opened its season with a 76-71 loss to Antelope Valley, but Coach Brian Beauchemin was encouraged by his team’s play entering Wednesday night’s game against Rio Hondo.

“Considering the fact that 11 of our 13 players are freshmen, I think we competed very hard and did a decent job as far as expectations for an opening game,” Beauchemin said. “We’re not too large, but I think we’re going to be difficult to play because other teams might have some problems matching up.”

Kenny Collins, a redshirt freshman from Cleveland High in Reseda, scored 18 points and had seven rebounds for Glendale against Antelope Valley. William Burr had 11 points for the Vaqueros.

The Glendale women’s basketball team started its season by winning the consolation championship of the Mt. SAC tournament last weekend.

Denise Dal Ponte scored 15 points and had 10 rebounds for the Vaqueros in a 67-56 victory over San Bernardino for the consolation title.

Glendale will participate in the Citrus tournament beginning today.

The Glendale men’s soccer team finished its Western State Conference schedule in a three-way tie for first place with Santa Barbara and Oxnard.

Glendale (9-3-3, 8-2-2 in the WSC) is seeded fourth in the Southern California Regional playoffs. The Vaqueros will play Cuyamaca College Saturday at 1 p.m. at Griffith Park in a first-round game.

The Glendale men’s cross-country team, which won the Western State Conference championship meet and the conference title, will compete in the state championship meet Saturday in Fresno.

Jacques Salsberg of Glendale won the men’s 8-K race at Griffith Park in 20 minutes, 25 seconds. Luis Jacob was fourth in 21:03 and Sergio Becerril fifth in 21:07.

Glendale’s America Rivas won the women’s race in 17:57 and led the Vaqueros to a second-place finish in conference. Glendale’s women’s team will also compete at the state championships.

COLLEGES

The Occidental football team concluded its season with a 35-6 loss to Redlands.

Occidental was unable to stop running back Sean Cheatham, who gained 153 yards and scored three touchdowns for Redlands (8-1, 6-0), which won its third straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship. Redlands plays at Wisconsin-La Crosse Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Occidental finished the season 5-4 and 3-3 in the SCIAC.

Occidental offensive lineman Jed Wockenfuss, running back Brian Madlangbayan, linebacker Brian Wolf and defensive back Andrew Wind were first-team all-conference selections.

The Occidental men’s cross-country team and three individuals from the Tiger women’s team will compete in the NCAA Division III national championships Saturday at Schenectady, N.Y.

The Occidental men’s team qualified for nationals by finishing second behind UC San Diego at the West Regional last weekend in Oakland. Occidental senior Jose Garcia won the men’s 8-K race in 26 minutes, 55 seconds. Konstatine Kinderich of Occidental was second in 26:56 and Will Allan of the Tigers was fourth in 27:09.

The Occidental women finished second behind UC San Diego, but only one women’s team from the West Regional qualifies for the finals. Becky Kopchick of Occidental, who won the women’s 5-K regional in 19:41; Arcelia Gomez, who was second in 19:43, and Kelly Dearborn, who was seventh in 20:14, qualified for the championships.

Occidental, under fifth-year Coach Brian Newhall, is coming off a 1991-1992 season in which the team finished 14-12 and 7-7 in the SCIAC.

Junior center Blair Slattery averaged 19.2 points and 11.7 rebounds last season. Senior forward Sandy Brown averaged 17.6 points in five games last season before he was sidelined by an injury.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Cate Weaver, La Canada--Weaver, a junior, helped La Canada upset previously unbeaten St. Mary’s and Rosemead in the first two rounds of the Southern Section Division IV volleyball playoffs.

Weaver had nine kills against fourth-seeded St. Mary’s and 10 kills and four blocks against Rosemead, helping the Spartans advance to a quarterfinal match against Valencia that was played Tuesday.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Angel Martinez, Glendale--Martinez, a sophomore from Saugus, caught six passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns in the Vaqueros’ 37-10 victory over Harbor.

The 5-foot-9, 161-pound Martinez scored on pass plays of 27 and 46 yards from quarterback Eric Kiesau.

MISCELLANY

Victor Vartoogian of Glendale won the silver medal in the shotput at the World Senior Games held last month at St. George, Utah. Vartoogian, 59, won the silver with a toss of 37 feet 6 inches . . . The Leukemia Society of America is sponsoring weekly training sessions for those interested in raising funds for the organization by running the Long Beach and/or Los Angeles marathons.
