A homeless man who roamed the streets of Costa Mesa was sentenced to 12 years in prison Thursday for stabbing a well-known boat mechanic.

In October, a West Orange County Superior Court jury convicted Jack Allan Gregerson, 25, of voluntary manslaughter in the slaying of Charles Edward Overturf, 36, of Costa Mesa.

Overturf worked at Archer Marine Services in Costa Mesa, near his home. His body was found June 22 after he failed to appear at work.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Pat Donahue said he asked Superior Court Judge David O. Carter to impose the maximum sentence of 12 years because of Gregerson’s previous criminal history, which includes misdemeanor convictions for assaultive behavior.

“Each time he was arrested, the crimes were more violent than the last,” Donahue said.

During the sentencing hearing, Gregerson said through his attorney that he was not guilty of the crimes, according to Donahue. Gregerson’s attorney could not be reached for comment.

Donahue said he believed Overturf was killed during a burglary and robbery because Overturf’s wallet was missing and his home was ransacked.
