SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Brethren Christian capitalized on a trick play midway through the fourth quarter, helping the Warriors defeat Malibu Kilpatrick, 7-0, Saturday at Artesia High.

Brethren (8-3) advanced to the quarterfinals--the first time since 1982--to play Village Christian (6-5). The site will be determined today by a coin toss.

“We used the left guard special to get the ball near the end zone,” said Brethren Christian Coach Mike Roark. “The play forces the defense to flow in the opposite direction.”

The left guard special allows quarterback Reggie Davis to hand off to the guard Jeff Zabel. Zabel took the handoff at the 39-yard line, hid the ball and ran down the left side to the Kilpatrick nine. On the same play, Kilpatrick was called for a face-mask penalty, which moved the ball to the two.

On the ensuing play, Davis ran into the end zone for the winning touchdown with five minutes 56 seconds remaining.

“I wasn’t expecting to get that much (30 yards) out of that play,” said Davis, who completed eight of 11 passes for 62 yards. He also rushed 16 times for 60 yards.

Kilpatrick (6-5) recovered three Brethren Christian fumbles and had one interception but failed to capitalize on any of the turnovers.

Brethren Christian fumbled away the opening kickoff to Kilpatrick’s LaBarron Smith at the Warriors’ 35. Six plays later on fourth down, Keith Washington stopped Reggie Maddox at the one. He also intercepted a pass by quarterback Ronald Coleman.

Said Kilpatrick Coach Glenn Bell: “Brethren Christian is a very solid, well-prepared team. Our defensive quickness helped us--I don’t think they have seen a team with our quickness.

“Offensively, we couldn’t get on track. We kept stumbling over our own two feet.”

Said Davis: “Our defense kept us in the game tonight.”
