College: Cypress

Sport: Soccer

Position: Midfielder

Class: Freshman

Early in the season, Cypress Coach Ray Haas didn’t hold back when predicting how well his team would do. Haas said the Chargers should be one of the top teams in Southern California, for sure, and maybe in the state.

The outstanding play of Yates on Saturday helped make her coach’s words come true as Cypress beat El Camino, 3-0, in a Southern California playoff game. Yates scored twice and spent the last 20 minutes playing fullback to help prevent El Camino from scoring.

“Brandi was the dominant force on the field,” Haas said. “No one played harder than her.”

The two goals give Yates 22 for the season, one behind team leader Laurie Wilson. Cypress plays host to Mt. San Antonio at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the winner advancing to the State tournament Dec. 5.
